The Emanations

Mixed media
1999
Painted in Kaurinui, autumn 1999
1120 mm x 1400 mm
Mixed media: watercolour, egg tempera and oil on primed paper, glued on canvas with PVA and cellulose glue;
Gold and silver leaf applied by restorer Ralf Wittig, Zwettl, July 2000.
Hundertwasser Art Centre, Whangarei

When Ralf Wittig had finished applying the primer for gilding and silvering the “almond eyes” and set up the picture after a certain drying time, he was surprised to find that the usual drying time had not been sufficient, the primer had remained liquid and had run down from the eyes, as if tears were running from them. It was decided not to remove the tears, but to gild and silver them as well as the eyes.
