On the occasion of the total refurbishing of the prefabricatet concrete-slab building from the seventies, the pupils and teachers at the "gymnasium", the German grammar school, expressed the desire that Hundertwasser assume the task of redesigning the school. Hundertwasser worked out the design free of charge, and architect Peter Pelikan drew the plans. Construction started in November 1997.This project was Hundertwasser's first one in the new federal states of the Federal Republic of Germany, were he had already designed housing complexes in Bad Soden and Plochingen and a Children Day-Care Centre in Frankfurt/Heddernheim.In order to support the financing of additional services that weere necessary for the reconstruction, but that were not sponsored by the city or the distric of Wittenberg, Hundertwasser donated a "building block". It consisted of an art print in an edition of 5,000 which was available for 150 DM. The proceeds of the sales served as an additional budget for the school and were controlled by a commission made up of students' representatives, city administrators and the Expo 2000 GmbH company (see APA 151). Part of the funds were used to make the playground between the school and a neighbouring day-care centre more suitable for children of school and pre-school age. This was done at Hundertwasser's suggestion.Since August 1, 2006, the official title of the school is "Luther-Melanchthon-Gymnasium Wittenberg".
