The Hundertwasser ship Regentag was built in Palermo in 1910, bought and rebuilt by Friedensreich Hundertwasser in 1968, and sailed by him and Captain Horst Wächter to New Zealand, where it lay at anchor in the Bay of Islands until 2004.
For Hundertwasser the Regentag was a significant phase of his life. It was his home, his country, his headquarters. He lived and painted on it for ten years.
In 2004, the Regentag was brought to Tulln on the initiative of Mayor Willi Stift on the occasion of a Hundertwasser exhibition and has been anchored in Tulln's guest harbour ever since. In 2015, the ship was listed as a historical monument.
Ventilation problems and water ingress in recent years caused shrinkage cracks and splits in the wood, as well as mould and sponge growth. Extensive renovation measures were started by boat builder Tobias van Kooij in September 2018 and continue to this day.
The Hundertwasser Non Profit Foundation spares no expense in maintaining the Regentag; 400,000 euros have already been raised by the Foundation. Another 150,000 euros are needed to renovate the ship below the waterline and the rigging.
The artworks will be on show from April 13.
A comprehensive catalogue in German/English/Korean will accompany the auction.
It will be possible to bid in the hall, on the phone, in writing and online.
The auction can be followed live online via the auction house's platform.
