Hundertwasser's comment on the work

This and the following, 869 and 870, are postage-stamp designs. I had an exhibition in the Musée Gauguin in Decmeber, 1985, and its director, Gilles Arthur, proposed these three designs to the postal service. But they were rejected. I developed the watercolours further, and they ended up as three Japanese woodcuts. It is an uplifting feeling to have an exhibition in Tahiti. In addition, Gilles Arthur invited people to a salad which I prepared in a wooden bowl with a wooden fork and spoon Paul Gauguin had carved himself. If these objects are used, they keep; if put in a glass case, they quickly deteriorate in the tropics. One year earlier I was able to make a fond wish of my friend Brô's come true: to organise an exhibition of his works in the Musée Gauguin and design the catalogue for it. Brô was in Tahiti twice.
