Town replanning
Model 1:20: Alfred Schmid, 1992
Presentation of the model: June 30, 1992
Backed by a referendum of 93 percent of Griffen citizens in an anonymous vote Hundertwasser was commissioned with a new town planning to regain the identity after the city was "cut" in two by a highway, later abandoned due to a detour to a new one.
Hundertwassers concept and plan included the recreation of the historical city gates, integrating offices for the local administration, a multifunctional hall, a new design of the main square and the abandoned highway dividing the city.
The Hundertwasser project model was presented in the town-hall for a second referendum of the Griffen citizens who enthusiastically voted for the realisation (97 percent). The mayor, head of the city Parliament Fractions and Hundertwasser presented the project to the governor of Carinthia, Christof Zernatto, and others who had to fund the project. The governor promissed funds for the project.
Local Architect organisations launched a campaign against the Hundertwasser project in Carinthia. Subsequently the governor gave in - and withdrew his promise for funds. The mayor resigned. The Hundertwasser Griffen project was dead.
