Starting from the design for the spiralriver-hand drinking fountain in Linz (ARCH 81), an outdoor drinking fountain, Hans Muhr developed on Hundertwasser's suggestion and following his design an indoor fountain as a climate and room temperature controlling device with a humidifying, ionising and germicidal effect. Similar to the drinking fountain in Linz, the interior fountains were fashioned from various types of stone selected by Hundertwasser, among them marble, travertine, granite, serpentine, brazil, as well as ceramics.

Hundertwasser's comment on the work
SPIRAL RIVER
THE HAND WHICH OPENS UPWARDS
SYMBOLISES THE CIRCLE OF THE WATER
FROM OUR SKY TO THE EARTH AND BACK AGAIN.
THE OPEN HAND RECEIVES AND GIVES AT THE SAME TIME.
THE SPIRAL ON THE PALM OF THE HAND
STANDS FOR OUR LINE OF LIFE,
THE CREATIVE GROWTH OF LIFE.
THE OPEN HAND IS A GESTURE OF THE RECONCILIATION
OF MAN WITH NATURE.
WATER, THE WAY YOU ARE FLOWING IS ALWAYS RIGHT.
