Hundertwasser's comment on the work

My paintings must have made an impression on Léopold Sédar Senghor when he saw them at Studio Paul Facchetti in Rue de Lille while a student in 1954-1956, for when he became President of Senegal, he was one of the first to show my large world-touring exhibition, in the Musée Dynamique in Dakar. Then he commissioned the Austrian State Printing Office with a series of postage stamps to be done by me (one of three). In his speech opening the Salzburg Festival of 1977, he compared me with Mozart and Rilke, calling me an Austrian citizen of the world, which was of course regarded as an embarrassing gaffe and totally ignored. I only met him once, at an audience in Dakar. He is a great visionary African, a statesman comparable to Nelson Mandela, and a poet. Léopold Sédar Senghor, the President of the Republic of Senegal Senghor gave the opening speech at the Salzburg Festival of 1977 and appreciated three important Austrians, among them Hundertwasser. With him the composer Mozart and the poet Rilke - each of these artists, Senghor maintained, it is apparent that they were exposed to the influence of different cultures, which they assimilated and formed into a symbiosis, and this symbiosis became for them a means of lending expression to what is essentially human and what is, as such, beyond all expression. Hereupon Hundertwasser was on friendly terms with Senghor, which Hundertwasser demonstrated with the design of postage stamps for Senegal.
