Commissioned by the Austrian Federal Ministry for the Environment, Youth and the Family under Minister Marilies Flemming. The environmental sign can be awarded to any product which is less of a burden on the environment than others thanks to improvements in production resulting in fundamentally environment-friendly processes, and which thus contributes to protecting our habitat.
Hundertwasser's design features a globe surrounded by a ring. Around this globe, green and blue trees are growing, symbols of vegetation and air. The environmental sign was intended in various colours:
green: for products which are more environmentally friendly in several categories
blue: for particular protection of air and water
brown: for steps taken to protect the soil and the plant or animal world
red: for environmental steps which lead to a reduction of required energy
yellow: for steps to reduce noise levels.
The evironmental sign was awarded for the first time in 1991.
