Ship redesign
Unveiling: March 28, 1996
The Danube excursion-ship line DDSG was founded in 1829 and forms the most famous and longest word in Austria: the DONAUDAMPFSCHIFFAHRTSGESELLSCHAFT. The owners of the "Vindobona" asked Hundertwasser to redesign the somewhat monotonous postwar ship, which - similar to the bateaux mouches on the Seine - shows the tourists the sights of Vienna form the water of the Danube Canal and the Danube: apart from the buildings of Otto Wagner those by Hundertwasser, too - Spittelau, KunstHausWien and the Hundertwasser House.
Hundertwasser designed a slow, nostalgic pleasure boat reminiscent of the days of the emperors and the Mississippi steamers and in keeping with Viennese temperament. The redesign with small-paned windows, pillars and golden spheres was done in cooperation with Peter Pelikan.
