This fountain was commissioned by Wilfried Holleis, Grand Hotel Zell am See. Hundertwasser conceived an ecological landscape installation consisting of water circulating through vegetation. Water flows from the lake to the fountain pond, then up to the fountain top, and finally cascades down to the pond like a waterfall. A closed circle. Later Hundertwasser decided to dedicate the fountain to the republic of Austria where the nine ceramic columns represent the Austrian "Länder" (federal states); the height of the columns equals the respective population of each of the nine "Länder". The columns' colours were supposed to reflect the proportion of the colours used in each of the "Länder's" coats-of-arms, based on Hundertwasser's own design of the coats-of-arms for the Austrian number plates.
