THE HAMBURG LINE

Drawing the line, manifesto and letter to Director von Oppen

Hamburg, 1959
Institute of Fine Arts Lerchenfeld, Hamburg, December 18, 1959, 3 - 11 p.m.; December 20, 1959
Mural Painting with red and black powder colours and PV

Painted with red and black pigment and PV; an uninterrupted line of about 10 km over walls, doors und windows of Hundertwasser's guest lecturer classroom rising in layers of spirals on the walls. In collaboration with the poets Bazon Brock and Herbert Schuldt, also for the manifesto; short cooperation with the astrologer Wilhelm Wulff and Siegfried Poppe and a few students. On December 19, in the evening, the continuation of the line was forbidden by the director of the Art Institute. A few days later it was scraped off and painted over. A small section of it remained on the cover of a recess.

On the occasion of the exhibition "Friedensreich Hundertwasser: Against the Grain. Works 1949-1970" in the Kunsthalle Bremen a reenactment of this event took place and started on October 17, 2012, at 3.11 pm - October 19, 2012, c. 8 pm. In the spirit of the original and in close collaboration with Bazon Brock a line was generated in an uninterrupted session lasting more than fifty hours - before the opening of the exhibition -, transforming a large gallery in the Kunsthalle into an endless spiral and a spectacular environment.Executers were the students of Joachim Hofmann of the course of studies "digital media" of HfK Bremen. The event at Kunsthalle Bremen was open for public and was accompanied by interdisciplinary lectures. The event in Kunsthalle Bremen was called "Die Linie des Lebens" (The line of life). As defined originally by Hundertwasser the line was wound up from Kunsthalle into the city and public area. The line was finished on the occasion of the "Hochschultage" of HfK on February 9, 2013 in the location of the Hochschule für Künste Bremen.
