In 1974 Hundertwasser created his first environmental poster for the "Conservation Week Campaign" in New Zealand for which the Nature Conservation Council awarded him  a citation certifying that he has made a significant contribution to the cause of conservation within New Zealand.

POSTER FOR CONSERVATION
National Conservation Week (August 2 – 9) will be marked this year with this poster specially designed by the Viennese artist Friendensreich Hundertasser.
Hundertwasser held an exhibition in in New Zealand in 1973 and was so impressed with what he considered the unspoiled nature of the countryside he designed this conservation poster.
He felt New Zealand represented something like a last earthly paradise as yet largely unmarked by the over-industrialization which has resulted in polluted water, a poisoned atmosphere, and ravaged forests elsewhere.
The poster symbolises Mother Earth renewing herself through growth, but with these natural cycles disrupted by the smoking factory chimneys of industry. It is reproduced in eight colours.
As well as designing the poster Hundertasser subsidised the printing of 10,000 copies in Europe. Half of these are for New Zealand and the rest will be sold throughout the rest of the world.
The posters are available from the Victoria University Students Union Office, the National Academy of Fine Arts and the district office of the Department of Lands and Survey, Wellington.
