Hundertwasser's comment on the work

Arnulf Rainer gave me some paintings he had painted which he no longer needed, to use as ground for my paintings. We were both still very poor. I was saddened that he wanted to throw paintings away. To me anything which had been "worked on" was sacred. I was firmly convinced that paintings which had already been "given life" had a soul, just like the humus soil of the forest, from which new things can grow better. My overpaintings of Rainer's paintings were reverent, so to speak, and have nothing to do with Rainer's own overpaintings later. But there is surely a strange, anticipatory transcendency behind it, which often inexplicably occurs in my pictures: e.g., in 606 Hana no Hana - The Nose-Flower - Konrad Bayer's Death, in the silkscreen print 700 Olympic Games Munich 1972, as well as in the poster 779 A Olympia and in 165 Arcade House and Yellow Tower.
